In its most typical form, the genre is characterized by repetitive 4/4 rhythms including bass drums, off-beat hi-hats, snare drums, claps, and/or snaps at a tempo between 120 beats per minute (bpm), synthesizer riffs, deep basslines, and often, but not necessarily, sung, spoken or sampled vocals. In house, the bass drum is usually sounded on beats one, two, three, and four, and the snare drum, claps, or other higher-pitched percussion on beats two and four. The drum beats in house music are almost always provided by an electronic drum machine, often a Roland TR-808, TR-909, or a TR-707. Claps, shakers, snare drum, or  hi-hat sounds are used to add syncopation. One of the signature rhythm riffs, especially in early (Chicago) house, is built on the clave pattern. Congas and bongos may be added for an African sound, or metallic percussion for a Latin feel.  The TR-909 drum machine (top) and TB-303 synthesizer, instruments often used in house music. Sometimes, the drum sounds are “saturated” by boosting the gain to create a more aggressive edge. One classic subgenre, acid house, is defined through the squelchy sounds created by the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer. House music could be produced on “cheap and consumer-friendly electronic equipment” and used sound gear, which made it easier for independent labels and DJs to create tracks. The electronic drum machines and other gear used by house DJs and producers were formerly considered “too cheap-sounding” by “proper” musicians. House music producers typically use sampled instruments, rather than bringing in session musicians into a recording studio. Even though a key element of house production is layering sounds, such as drum machine beats, samples, synth basslines, and so on, the overall “texture…is relatively sparse”. Unlike pop songs, which emphasize higher-pitched sounds, such as melody, in house music, the lower-pitched bass register is most important.

Die musikalischen Ursprünge des House liegen in der Disco-Musik der späten 1970er Jahre, deren Einfluss vor allem in Harmonik und Melodieführung spürbar ist. Frankie Knuckles legte im Warehouse in Chicago auf. Schon damals war es üblich, dass die Disco-Maxis Club-Mixes enthielten – das bedeutete im Normalfall, dass ausgedehnte, auf den Rhythmus konzentrierte Instrumentalpassagen vorhanden waren. Knuckles stellte fest, dass gerade diese Rhythmusteile die Gäste in Ekstase versetzten, und begann damit, nur noch sie ineinander zu vermischen und den Rest der Platte wegzulassen. Darüber hinaus führte er aus: „Kraftwerk waren Hauptbestandteil bei der Entstehung von House-Music in Chicago. Ich mixte damals in den frühen 80s unseren 80s-Phillysound mit den Elektrobeats von Kraftwerk und den Electronic Body Music-Bands Europas.“ Neben Knuckles zählen vor allem Marshall Jefferson, Jesse Saunders und Chip E. als Pioniere des Chicago House. Später griffen die Detroiter Produzenten Juan Atkins, Derrick May und Kevin Saunderson diese neue Liebe zur Monotonie auf und entwickelten daraus den Detroit Techno. Gleichzeitig entstand in New Yorker Clubs wie der Paradise Garage und The Loft, geprägt durch DJs wie Larry Levan, François Kevorkian und Eric Kupper, ebenfalls eine wichtige House-Szene. Die Paradise Garage war Namenspate für die disco-orientierte House-Variante des Garage House. Zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre verbreitete sich der Begriff „House“ vielerorts auch als Oberbegriff für verschiedene Arten elektronischer, rhythmischer Musikstile, dem selbst anfangs die neuentwickelte Technomusik noch als Techno House untergeordnet wurde. Das führt allerdings zu einigen Verwirrungen, da es inzwischen auch einen Stil namens Tech House gibt, eine technoisierte Form moderner minimalerer Housemusik. Für die meisten Detroiter und Chicagoer DJs und Produzenten gibt es keine echte Unterscheidung zwischen Techno und House.

Тот отказался, так как планировал открытие собственного клуба. Вместо себя Ларри порекомендовал своего лучшего друга — 22-летнего Фрэнки Наклса. В марте следующего года Фрэнки дал сет на открытии Warehouse и повторил его неделей позже. Публике понравились вечеринки; Фрэнки получил резидентство в клубе и перебрался в Чикаго. Музыкой, которую ставил Фрэнки в первые годы деятельности клуба, было находившееся тогда на пике диско. Позднее диджей не боялся экспериментировать и разбавлял сеты треками из начала 1970-х, малоизвестной импортной музыкой и песнями других танцевальных жанров. В особенности на это толкала надвигающаяся «смерть» диско, которая в итоге произошла в 1981 году. Жанр вышел из моды, и на рынке стал ощущаться дефицит танцевальных пластинок. Диджейские эксперименты нравились публике, и в итоге Фрэнки научился создавать сложные ремиксы, полностью заменяя в треках ритм, биты и басовые партии.  Параллельно в Нью-Йорке резиденцией Ларри Левана и меккой нового звучания был клуб Paradise Garage. Он был расположен в Сохо на Манхеттене и просуществовал с 1977 по 1987 год. Своё название он получил в наследство от автомобильного Parking Garage, который был расположен там ранее. А само название клуба послужило названием для стиля музыки Garage House.
